Nature Awakens

During one of the first COVID lockdowns I ran into a humorous article about penguins touring an empty aquarium in Chicago. I wanted to visually capture the quirky situation—the irony of nature awakening while we observed it from our isolated bedrooms.

I started out from a simple 2D collage illustration of the scene

I was drawn to the idea of animals watching each other, blurring the line between spectator and spectacle. By breaking the aquarium into multiple angles, I created an immersive experience that questions whether the penguins and other inhabitants were, in fact, observing us.

I broke down each element of the static image to create the walls, water, and reflection of the actual aquarium.

The final result is an interactive animation, allowing viewers to explore the aquarium from various perspectives and experience it through different points of view.
